How We Work

At The Well, our clinical practice is guided by these values and beliefs:

Person-centred

We work in partnership with clients to meet their goals, and believe that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect

Strengths-based

We respect and appreciate the skills and wisdom of each individual, and strive to build on those strengths

Humanistic & Holistic

We value the uniqueness of each individual and the interconnectedness of their physical, mental, social, and physical wellbeing, rather than seeing them as the sum of their “problems”

Trauma-informed

Many of us live with the ongoing impacts of past trauma, and we strive to provide an environment that feels safe by being transparent, trustworthy, collaborative and empowering the individual’s sense of choice and control

LGBTQ2SIA+ Positive

We affirm and celebrate all sexual and gender identities, and all the beautiful embodiments thereof

Anti-oppressive

We approach our work with the knowledge that power, oppression and inequity impact our lives in real and important ways

Cultural Humility

We respect diverse cultural traditions and spiritual beliefs and practices, and the meanings they hold uniquely for each person

Nurturing Hope

We firmly believe that healing and healthy momentum is possible

Why Therapy?

My mind is a bad neighbourhood I try not to go into alone.

ANNE LAMONT

People seek out the support of a therapist for different reasons: feeling overwhelmed, experiencing strong emotions, or just plain stuck in a pattern. Whether it’s single-session, or ongoing while working toward a long-term goal, psychotherapy can support you to make a shift, allowing new possibilities to surface. Even if you’re not sure what your goals for therapy are, dedicated and focused time with a therapist, who is there solely to support you, can help you find some clarity. Fruitful therapy is an investment of time, commitment, and effort.

Choosing a Therapist

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.

MAYA ANGELOU

Research shows that a successful fit, or “click”, between a client and therapist is the first key to a productive therapeutic dynamic. Deciding whether it is a good fit often takes a few sessions to figure out. This is just a regular part of the process of learning what works best for you. If at any point you or the therapist feels that the therapeutic relationship isn’t productive, the sessions can be wrapped up and you will be offered support to connect with a different therapist.
